Fibre focus earns commission
Regional arts and crafts lovers descended on Todmorden earlier in September to admire examples of the local community’s creative force.
Among those enjoying a hectic three days in Calderdale, West Yorkshire at Todmorden Open Studios was fibre artist Josephine Gornall, who displayed contemporary and mixed media work alongside a mosaic creator and willow weaver.
“It’s been busy throughout the period of the artists’ and makers’ festival,” reports Josephine, who co-founded the event five years ago. “Jewellery items and cards proved popular, so did my fibre animal figures. A visitor was fascinated by my group of felt animals tucked into a nest and commissioned a long-tailed tit from me.”
Her fibre workshop was a hit too. “One artist who attended wanted guidance on how to create rabbit figures in a fresh medium, like fibre, and may now plan a series of them in different sizes and colours. It’s great when you feel you have inspired someone to conceive something new.”
Josephine runs regular workshops for those keen to learn the secrets of fibre art and delivers participatory arts projects for schools and community groups throughout the North West.
Her next workshop is to be held on 28 October. Learn more on Facebook or email studio@phinefibre.co.uk
